It's Been a While

Sorry again for the radio silence.

I figure the best way to pick it up again is with mention of a band I've finally rediscovered-- Gogol Bordello. I heard their song "Start Wearing Purple" a few months ago on NPR/WUTC and really liked it, but of course forgot about it completely by the time I got home. Over the weekend I had the good fortune to be reintroduced to Eugene Hütz's work when a friend of mine brought a mix CD with several Gogol songs on it, including "Think Locally, Fuck Globally." Admitedly the several screwdrivers I'd had before the song came up meant I had no idea what he was singing about until I looked up the lyrics just now, but I have to say it made for a great five person jig at one on a Saturday morning.

Looking up more info about the band led me to this article, which has made me really want to see the band live. I've also been recently introduced to The Dresden Dolls and so immediatly noticed the "punk caberet" description. The fusion of so many diverse musical influences (I've enjoyed The Pogues Irish/punk combo for many years) along with throwing in street performance styles and references to caberet and Vaudville sounds like an absolutely delightful way to spend an evening.

It will probably be while yet before I can make it to concerts of any sort, however, as I have been fortunate enough to be doing a great deal of traveling this summer. I just got back from Switzerland, Italy, Slovenia and Munich, and will be leaving again in about two weeks for Oxford, England. I've accumulated quite a number of photos, and aside from blogging about the various articles and bands I run across, I think I'll be following my mom's advice to start photoblogging some of the better shots I've accumulated. Here are a few from Cortona, Italy.

While we were enjoying some benches in the town square as a good place to eat a picnic lunch, this luxurious old car pulled up. It turned out a rather large wedding party (from the UK, I'm guessing, based on their accents) was making use of the church that morning.

As you can see, I wasn't the only tourist snapping photos of the lucky couple as they make their way up the steps of the church.

Cortona's website has this picture that captures the whole building.

And here is a better shot of the bride herself.
