I've been hearing a lot of talk on campus today about how John McCain either did better during last night's debate than any previous or (as two gentlemen at the cafeteria waffle irons dared suggest) even won the debate.
What planet is everyone on?
All the blinking and rage and weirdly pink lips aside, I can't believe anyone would think McCain had a good performance. He could have been ten times as poised and well spoken, but would have come off every bit as despicable just because of A) only pretending to acknowledge the racist/death-threat-y comments made by his supporters, and then going on to defend those bigots B) dismissing the very real health concerns that are a major factor in a woman's choice to abort or not abort.
I am tired of McCain continuing to imply that his supporters are more patriotic than Obama's, even as they prove again and again that they dislike entire (large) demographics of the population for superficial reasons like more melanin in their skin or having uteri. Is it really loving your country if you hate over half the citizens?
I don't trust a man to be my president if he tolerates the hatred of the people in his country who are more brown in color by those who are more pale. I don't trust a man to be my president if he tolerates threats of violence from some of the citizens under his watch against others. I don't trust a man to be my president if he openly dismisses my right to protect my own health and my own privacy over a personal decision I may or may not ever have to make, and certainly hope that I don't. I don't trust John McCain.
