So after a fabulous Thanksgiving, I can safely say it summed up most of the things I'm thankful for. Dear Boyfriend and I had dinner #1 with my parents and an awesome neighbor and it was full of thoughtfully chosen recipes, family favorites, and foodie cooking. Dinner discussion led us to all remember how frickin thankful we are that Obama is elected, and that we were among friends of similar opinions and could vent some frustrations about other things in the country needing change without fear of causing the kind of holiday rows that are famous for darkening the holidays. We went for a walk and enjoyed the beautiful day and beautiful neighborhood I'm thankful for. We played with dogs, who I am very thankful run around on planet Earth. Then we drove up to Dear Boyfriend's parents' place for dinner #2 with extended family (grandmothers! uncles! girlfriends and daughters and nieces! brothers! best friends since high school!) and enjoyed some classic Thanksgiving dishes (super cheesy broccoli casserole! bacony mashed potatoes! coconut pie!) and joking. Dinner was followed by rounds of libations, and we were thankful for good times, good food, and a full full house. Everyone ended up staying over and every couch, bed, and armchair in the house was full. And we can be very thankful for pancakes, bacon, and orange juice after a night of over eating, white russians, and rusty nails (the drink, not the tetanus!). Throughout the day and some of this morning I've been reading the e-mails that the Honors program sends out as a Thanksgiving tradition--students like to send everyone e-mails listing what we are thankful for, and it was a lovely reminder of how lucky we were to go to college, have a wonderful Honors program, to have one another as friends, to have our families...and also more sobering things to be thankful for like how different our lives are from those in Mumbai and that we are safe and happy at the moment.
So here's to thanksgiving, and now I'm back to getting my papers done.
