San Antonio

A couple weeks ago I went to San Antonio, Texas for a conference. It was a fabulous trip. San Antonio's touristy district is glittery and fun and outside the downtown sections of conference hotels and big businesses, it reminds me a lot of Florida towns like Bradenton and seems like a cool place to live. We saw the Alamo, and ate tons of fabulous Mexican food, went to an art museum, and got a lot of great ideas from the conference to bring home.

Here is along the river walk, where there were lots of large old trees (they were decorating them with Christmas lights when we walked by) and bridges very reminiscent of Venice.

A riverside church. I was disappointed that I didn't have the time or transportation to check out the Missions like a guy at a panel I moderated suggested, so this church was one of the few I saw.

There was a great mix of stuff at the San Antonio art museum. They had a little Greek, a little Egyptian-- a little bit of all the art museum basics, really, but also a very nice selection of Pre-Columbian, local folk and modern art.

I freaking love this painting. Clearly this style informed Mark Ryden's art, which I really dig. Look in the bottom right corner, there is a "fearsome alligator" eating a man in one gulp!!

This was at a fabulous lounge we found called Soho. If you're ever in San Antonio and want a fun, classy place to have some reasonably priced drinks, check it out. It's just a few blocks away from Hard Rock Cafe. I loved the decor. They kept the integrity of the building's original life as a bank, and had a great modern-meets-Victorian feel. There were neat paintings that were a mix of modern abstract and Degas. I would kill for somewhere this classy and chill in Chattanooga. I don't like our bar culture in Chattanooga very much, so don't even get me started raving about The Heat, a gay bar that one of the guys on the trip and I went to the last night. I am so jealous of other cities' night life.

This was a pretty pretty Prickly Pear Margarita I got at the hotel bar. I'm a little bit of a margarita connoisseur, and I was pleasantly surprised that even the most basic margarita was more like the Top Shelf ones offered here.

The food was amazing as well-- here is a taco salad one of the girls on the trip ordered. I couldn't get enough of the fresh avocados and delicious salsa free flowing. This was had at a good Riverwalk restaurant called the Naked Iguana. I don't have any good photos, but our last dinner was at Boudros, a pretty upscale reservation-only kind of place where I had the most amazing crab enchiladas. I could eat like that forever and never get sick of tex-mex.

Everyone have a good rest of the weekend. Dear Boyfriend and I are about to go off and enjoy the fall colors.
