Summer Rhythm
I've been getting into a pleasant summer rhythm for the one month I have at home between Turkey and returning to Oxford for another 5 weeks like last summer. I've been continuing to work the job that is taking me to Oxford-- there's more last minute details than I, at least, anticipated. When I haven't been doing that I've been going up to see Alex's family, where there is always good food, good fun, and good friends.
Last week Alex and I went to the Greek Festival at the Greek Orthodox Church and enjoyed all the tasty gyro we could eat before the music and dancing began. We cut our stay there a bit short so we could stop by the auction at Chattanooga Auction House . Alex was very tolerant of my trying on all the three and four carat rings in the jewelry chest-- they usually have some very spectacular diamonds and sapphires from Lookout Mountain and Atlanta estates and it's fun to try on something ridiculously huge for a few seconds.
Today as we approach the weekend we had the treat of Tim 'n' Kim rolling in from Johnson City with their newly sprung offspring, baby Ila. It was Ila's first tour of Chattanooga and she was quickly introduced to many a UTC professor and to the campus I'm sure her parents hope will be her alma mater. I went out to the Yellow Deli with Tim and Kim, a first! I honestly wouldn't have gone if they didn't want to, since I'm still miffed that the Yellow Deli kept me up many nights during their construction phase. I have to admit the interior is lovely and they have excellent sandwiches, however. I got the Deli Rose sandwich and some papaya juice. It was a good dining experience, but it wasn't superior to some of my previous favorite downtown lunch spots like Caffeine, so I think I'll let Tim and Kim's visit be the exception to my (admittedly rare) lunches out.
Hope everyone else is enjoying summer in Chattanooga. Summer really is Chattanooga's season. Despite the often miserable heat and humidity, it seems Tennessee shines its best during the summer, and its the season I associate most with this place. Summer here means Nightfall, Riverbend, iced slush puppies in the park, hiking at Lula Lake and Rainbow Loop, fountains on at the Aquarium and Coolidge Park, and that cool whoosh of air conditioning at the movie theater.
Cheers to summer.
